미국의 가수이자 배우 Katy Perry는 2001년 데뷔작 [Katy Hudson] 발매 이후 여러 레이블과의 만남을 가졌지만 앨범 발매가 무산되면서 어려운 시기를 겪고 2007년 캐피톨 레코드에서 발매한 싱글 'Ur So Gay'가 지역 라디오에서 소폭의 히트를 거두며 이름을 알리기 시작했다.

 

2008년 앨범 발매에 앞서 공개된 첫 싱글 'I Kiss the Girl'이 7주간 빌보드 Hot 100 정상을 차지하고 뒤이어 30개국 차트 정상에 오르면서 마침내 새로운 팝 스타의 명성을 얻기 시작했으며, 정규 1집 [One Of The Boys]는 발매 이후 1년 안에 500만 장 이상을 판매하는 기염을 토했다.

그를 한 단계 더 도약하게 한 것은 Snoop Dogg이 피처링했던 싱글 'California Gurls'가 1위를 차지하면서 불이 붙기 시작한 2집 [Teenage Dream]의 인기 덕분이기도 했다.

 

 

이 앨범은 차트 등장과 동시에 1위에 올랐고, 후속 싱글 'Teenage Dream', 'Firework', 'E.T.' 등으로 5연속 1위 싱글을 만들어내는 대히트 행진을 이어가게 되었다.

2013년에 공개된 정규 3집 [Prism]은 가사와 내용 면에서 자신의 내면을 더 많이 보여주고 있고, 음악적으로도 예전 두 장에 비해 훨씬 다양한 음악적 스타일로 자신을 확장하는 모습을 보여준 작품이었다. 
 
2017년에는 정규 4집 [Witness]를 공개하였고, Nicki Minaj가 피처링으로 참여한 타이틀곡 'Swish Swish'를 비롯해 'Chained To The Rhythm', 'Bon Appetit' 등으로 인기를 얻었으며, 3년 만의 정규작 [Smile]로 여전한 명성을 이어갔다.
