스팅 (Sting)-For Her Love

영국의 싱어송라이터 Sting (스팅)은 70년대 말에서 80년대 초반을 풍미한 3인조 록그룹 The Police의 베이시스트이자 보컬리스트로 음악 경력을 시작해 그룹의 인기가 정점에 있던 시기에 돌연 그룹의 해체를 선언하며 솔로 뮤지션으로서의 활동을 시작하였다.

 

펑크와 로큰롤에 레게를 결합한 뉴 웨이브 음악을 선보였던 The Police 시절과는 달리 솔로로 나선 Sting은 재즈와 팝, 록 음악이 섞인 독자적인 음악을 선보였으며 'If You Love Somebody Set Them Free', 'Englishman in New York', 'Fragile', 'All This Time', 'It's Probably Me', 'If I Ever Lose My Faith in You' 등의 굵직한 히트곡을 남겼다.

이 중에서 'Englishman in New York'과 'Fragile'은 국내에서도 큰 인기를 누리며 현재까지도 많은 사랑을 받는 팝의 클래식으로 자리 잡았고, 이와 더불어 영화 "Leon"의 삽입곡 'Shape of My Heart' 역시 해외에서의 인기에 비해 국내에서 유달리 사랑받고 있는 Sting의 음악이기도 하다. 2000년대로 들어오며 Sting은 영국 전통 음악 및 클래식 음악에 깊은 관심을 보이거나 뮤지컬 제작에 참여하는 등 록과 팝, 재즈를 벗어나 좀 더 다양한 장르의 음악으로 활동 영역을 넓히고 있다. The Police 시절 앨범과 솔로 앨범을 모두 포함하여 Sting은 현재까지 총 1억 장 이상의 음반 판매고를 올렸으며 총 16개의 "그래미 어워드"를 포함한 수많은 상을 받았다. 2003년 그는 The Police 멤버의 자격으로 "로큰롤 명예의 전당"에 헌액되었다.
