영국 록 밴드 Coldplay (콜드 플레이)는 1996년 런던에서 결성해 2000년 데뷔 앨범 [Parachutes]로 영국뿐만 아니라 미국에서도 큰 성공을 거두었다.

이후 모든 정규 앨범을 빌보드 차트 상위권에 올려놓으며 전 세계적으로 총 8천만 장에 가까운 거대한 판매고를 올렸다. 2002년의 2집 앨범도 초대형 히트작으로 명성을 떨치며 "그래미 어워드" 올해의 레코드 부분을 수상했으며, 전 세계를 투어하며 많은 팬들을 형성했다.

2005년 6월에 발매된 정규 3집 [X&Y]는 감성적인 록 음악의 정점에 위치한 작품으로, 영국과 미국에서 동시에 1위에 올랐으며 유럽과 아메리카, 아시아 등 전 세계 수많은 국가에서 1위를 차지하는 기염을 토했다. 4집 [Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends]는 전작들에 비해 상당히 확장된 스케일의 음악들을 담았으며, 최대의 히트곡인 'Viva La Vida'는 팝 음악팬들의 큰 사랑을 받았다. 이 앨범을 통해 "그래미 어워드" Song of the Year를 포함한 3개 부문을 수상하는 영광을 누렸다.
