아이들 (Idle)-WHY / Freedom

디지털 잔다르크(DIGITAL Jeanne d’Arc)는 노이즈 기반의 일렉트로닉 그룹, IDLE 아이들의 지난 5년간 활동을 집결하는 상징적인 앨범이다.

 

아날로그 바이닐 사운드에서 추출한 잡음으로 이루어진 1집 [Idling echo], 현대 사회에 공존하는 과거 한국 전쟁의 잔상을 시청각적으로 표현한 2집 [Invisible Ground], 자연의 바다를 제2의 우주로 시청각화하는 3집 [Second Universe]까지, 사운드의 미세 혈관과 같은 노이즈에서부터 출발해 지면과 바닷속에서 길어올린 상징인 디지털 잔다르크는 전쟁과 평화의 중간 지점에서 대립하는 용서와 복수의 간극을 포착한다.

현실이 가상 속으로 포섭된 메타 시대에서 모두가 범람하는 잡음의 바다에서 유랑하는 전사와 같다. 디지털 잔다르크는 바다에서 태어나 노이즈의 세계에서 벌이는 전투의 마스코트로서 개개인이 마음속에 품고 있던 복수의 시나리오를 완성시켜준다. 그러나 다음 트랙에서 다시 자유의 속성을 용서로 읊는 기계적 나레이션은 이 앨범이 말하고자 하는 것을 상기시킨다. 마지막 트랙이 첫 번째 ‘Freedom’의 Instrumental 버전으로 ‘Action’이라는 제목을 사용한 데에도 끝까지 놓고 싶지 않은 분명한 목적으로 전체 앨범 짜임새 있게 이루어져 있다는 것을 느낄 수 있다. 모두가 서로를 용서하고 자유로워 지기를 바라며, 앨범 전체 구성은 각 트랙 순서대로 어렴풋이 아는 진리와 험난한 현실의 세계, 그리고 꿈꾸던 가상의 복수를 오가다 결국 평화적 가치의 중요성으로 회귀한다. 따라서 디지털 잔다르크는 어느 하나의 상징이 아닌, 우리 모두를 지칭하는 상징이라는 것을 되새기게 만든다.
