5인조 그룹 After Thoughts의 셀프 타이틀 EP [After Thoughts]는 감각적인 사운드로 매료시키는 힘을 가지고 있다고만 말하기에는 흥미로운 면이 있다..

 

먼저 입체감이다. 스스로를 얼터너티브 록 그룹으로 정의하고 있는 이들은 프로그레시브적인 진행과 실험 (0107), 강렬한 디스토션 기타와 개러지스러운 드럼 사운드 (Poetic), 그리고 팝과의 결합 내지는 흡수 (I Can’t Have You, Crystal Clear) 중 하나를 택하기보다는 이를 모두 아우르는 쪽을 택했다. 셀프 타이틀 EP로서 자신들의 정체성을 입체적으로 구축하는 기능을 충실히 수행했다고 볼 수 있다.

그러나 [No Anchor] 를 기점으로 전환되는 무드는 이러한 입체감을 강화한다기보다는 이 그룹의 이면성을 보여주는 것에 가깝다. 고조와 이완의 반복을 예상하게 될 즈음 급작스럽게 종료되는 이 트랙은 앞선 4개 트랙의 흐름과 그에 대한 반응을 압축적으로 모사해낸다. 이후 이어지는 [Born Royalty] 는 완전히 다른 세상으로 들어온 듯하다. 밴드 세션은 루프로 교체되고, 화자에게 결핍을 안겨주던 대상은 급작스럽게 존재하지 않게 되었다. 마지막 트랙인 [Wannabe] 에서 다시 친숙한 피아노락으로 돌아오면서도 여전히 화자 외의 다른 인물은 보이지 않는다.

이런 발칙한 구성으로 내러티브의 공백에 대한 상상을 자극하는 것이 가능했던 이유는 사운드적인 완성도에 있지 않을까 싶다. 이 그룹이 본작 다음으로 바라보고 있는 지점 - 사운드와 내러티브 모두 - 이 어디일지를 기대해본다.
