EJO-Legalize It

한 음악가의 철학적 내면을 들여다볼 수 있는 곡, EJO [Chameleon Man]
래퍼 겸 프로듀서, 디제이, 모델 등 다방면으로 활동하는 에조(EJO)가 자신의 첫 EP [Chameleon Man]을 발표한다.

자신의 지난 첫 정규 앨범 [Mind Web Wanderer]가 EJO의 내면 세계를 담아내며 많은 이의 호기심을 자극했고, 리믹스 앨범으로 그 존재를 한 번 더 알렸다면 이번 EP는 그러한 내면을 표현으로, 내면 밖으로 풀어내는 하나의 과정이라고 볼 수 있다.

선공개된 “Home Callin’”을 통해 집, 고향이라는 존재에 관한 고찰을 이미 드러낸 바 있는 에조는 이번 앨범을 통해 곡마다 자신의 생각이나 시선을 전달한다. 앨범과 같은 이름의 제목 “Chameleon Man”을 들어보면 그 부분에 대해 좀 더 알 수 있으며, 각자가 생각할 만한 여지를 남긴다. 그는 마치 도시 위 원주민과도 같다. 어딘가 낯설지만 그 안에 속해 있는 것이 어색하진 않으며, 잘 섞여 있는 것 같지만 조금만 다른 시야에서 보면 괴리가 느껴진다. 각자의 생각 안에 사는 에조라는 인물의 모습이 저마다 다르지만, 결국 그 모든 이미지가 에조 본인이라는 점을 에조는 이미 깨달았다. 특정한 색채에 맞춰 변한다는 점보다는 그 모든 것이 될 수 있다는 점에서 카멜레온 맨은 에조 본인을 지칭하는 것이 아닐까 싶다.

허비 행콕(Herbie Hancock)의 곡 “Chameleon”은 꽤 긴 길이의 곡임에도, 재즈 훵크의 곡임에도 스탠다드가 되어 수많은 이에 의해 연주되었다. 대부분의 스탠다드 곡이 누구에게 연주되느냐에 따라 그 모습이 달라지는 습성을 지니고 있지만, 허비 행콕의 곡은 제목과 그 특징이 맞물려 좀 더 인상적이고 이질적인 이미지를 준다. 에조 또한 비슷한 제목으로, 그러나 자신만의 연출로 힙합과 훵크를 적절히 배합하여 자신의 이야기를 꺼내고, 문장으로 끝내기보다는 질문을 던진다. 그의 화두를 잘 들으며 여러분도 각자의 존재에 관해 스스로 되묻는 시간을 가져보길 바란다. 앨범은 CD로도 제작될 예정이며, CD에서는 마지막 곡인 “Rabies”를 들을 수 있다.
