미국의 아카펠라 그룹 Pentatonix는 고등학교 동창으로 만난 Mitch Grassi와 Scott Hoying, Kirstie Maldonado는 오디션 프로그램 "The Sing-Off"에 참가하기 위해 보컬 베이스 Avi Kaplan과 첼로 박싱으로 유명했던 Kevin Olusola를 추가 영입해 그룹을 완성했고, 대회에서 우승을 차지하며 이름을 알렸다.

 

공식적인 음악 행보는 2012년 발매된 첫 EP [PTX, Volume 1]로 시작되었는데, 앨범은 빌보드 차트 14위에 랭크되고 20만 장 이상의 판매 기록을 세워 새로운 실력파 아티스트의 데뷔를 알렸다. 

2015년 10월, 오리지널 곡을 중심으로 담은 정규 앨범은 셀프 타이틀 [Pentatonix]로 제목을 통해 이들의 스스로의 음악에 대해 얼마나 고민하고 준비했는지를 알 수 있다. 앨범은 발매 첫 주에 약 10만여 장을 판매됐고, 앨범 차트 1위를 차지하며 앨범에 대한 기대를 증명했다. 인기에 힘입어 "2015 그래미 어워드"에서 베스트 아카펠라 상을 수상하는 영광을 안았다.
 
또한 크리스마스 앨범인 [PTXmas], [A Pentatonix Christmas], [Christmas Is Here!], [We Need A Little Christmas] 등으로 큰 인기를 얻어 크리스마스 캐럴의 대표작들로 손꼽히고 있으며, 꾸준히 커버 곡들을 발표하면서 영상과 함께 전 세계적인 사랑을 받고 있다. 이어 2021년 2월에는 신작 [The Lucky Ones]를 내놓고 독보적인 사운드를 이어갔다.
