미국의 R&B 소울 싱어송라이터 John Legend (존 레전드)는 가수 Lauryn Hill의 앨범 [The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill]의 연주자로 참여하게 되면서 본격적으로 뮤지션의 길을 걷기 시작했다.

 

그의 재능을 눈 여겨본 Kanye West의 레이블 GOOD Music과 정식 계약을 체결해 2004년 데뷔 앨범 [Get Lifed]를 발매했고, 뒤 이어 공개된 싱글 'Ordinary People'이 싱글 차트 24위, R&B 싱글 차트 4위를 기록하며 장기간 차트에 랭크되었다.

또한, "그래미 어워드" 본상인 올해의 신인상을 비롯, 올해의 R&B 앨범상과 올해의 남성 R&B 보컬 퍼포먼스상 등 총 3개 부문의 수상자가 되었다.
 
2006년에 발매된 두 번째 앨범 [Once Again] 역시 전작 못지않은 인기를 누렸다. 앨범 차트 3위, R&B 앨범 차트 정상에 올라 전 세계적으로 총 2백만 장 이상 판매되었으며, 싱글 'Heaven'을 통해 다시 한번 "그래미 어워드" 올해의 남성 R&B 보컬 퍼포먼스상을 수상하며 2년 연속 동일 부문 정상에 올랐다. 2008년 가을에는 세 번째 정규 앨범 [Evolver]를 발표했고, 2010년 힙합 그룹 The Roots와 함께 한 프로젝트 앨범 [Wake Up!]이 음악팬들과 평론가들의 절대적인 지지를 얻으며 또 한 번의 그래미상을 안겼다.
 
2013년, 4집 앨범 [Love in the Future]를 공개했고, 싱글 'All of Me'는 첫 빌보드 싱글 차트 1위 곡이 되었다. 이 곡은 총 5백만 건 이상의 다운로드를 기록했으며, 앨범 역시 차트 4위에 올라 골드 레코드가 되었다. 이후 가족에 대한 사랑을 담은 다섯 번째 정규앨범 [DARKNESS AND LIGHT]로 따뜻한 음악을 전했으며, 2020년 6월, Raphael Saadiq이 총괄 프로듀싱하고 Charlie Puth, Rapsody, Gary Clark Jr., Anderson Paak이 참여한 [Bigger Love]를 발매했다.
